Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Iliotibial band syndrome (ITB syndrome) is the most common cause of pain on the outside of the knee in runners and other sports people.
Your IT Band runs down the length of your thigh, working with knee ligaments to help stabilise your knee joint. When it rubs repeatedly against the lower end of your thigh bone as it joins your knee, friction can cause inflammation and pain.
Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)
Running on hard surfaces, particularly when doing long mileage, is a major cause of pain on your lower leg. These are a major symptom of Tibial Stress Syndrome. It is an extremely painful condition which can be hard to shake, and often recurs without treatment once you return to running.
This is a common injury to the tendon that runs down the back of your lower leg to your heel. You may get pain, stiffness, tenderness and sometimes swelling that makes it difficult to move freely.
Plantar Fasciitis (and Heel Spurs)
A painful inflammation of the fibrous band of connective tissue (plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the ball of the foot.
It can be further complicated by Heel Spurs, where a calcium buildup causes the formation of a bony spur. Although abnormal gait and weight issues can be factors, this is especially common among runners and other athletes.
